Mouse pad guide

How to clean a mouse pad.

The best way to clean a cloth mouse pad is by hand: lukewarm water, a little mild soap, gentle scrubbing, then a full air dry. It takes 10 minutes of work and brings back that smooth, consistent glide. Here's exactly how to do it.

Why clean your mouse pad?

Every session leaves something behind: sweat, skin oils, dust and the occasional snack. Over time, that buildup makes your glide slower and less consistent, and it starts to look and smell worn. A clean pad feels better, tracks better and lasts longer.

What you need

  • Lukewarm water (a sink, tub or shower works)
  • Mild soap, like hand soap or a drop of dish soap
  • A soft brush or sponge
  • A clean towel
  1. Step 1

    Check the label

Some mouse pads, such as RGB pads with electronics, should never go in water. If your pad has a cable, lights or a care label that says "wipe only", skip to the quick clean at the end of this guide.

  2. Step 2

    Wet the surface

Rinse the pad with lukewarm water until the cloth surface is fully wet. Avoid hot water, which can weaken the glue between the cloth and the rubber base.

  3. Step 3

    Wash gently

Add a small amount of mild soap and scrub in small circles with a soft brush or sponge. Focus on the areas where your wrist and arm rest; that's where most dirt builds up. Don't scrub hard: you want to lift the dirt, not wear down the surface.

  4. Step 4

    Rinse well

Rinse until the water runs clear and there's no soap left. Leftover soap can make the surface feel sticky and change your glide.

  5. Step 5

    Press out the water

Lay the pad flat on a towel, place another towel on top and press down firmly. Never wring, fold or twist your mouse pad. That's how pads get permanent creases and lose their flat surface.

  6. Step 6

    Air dry completely

Let the pad dry flat, cloth side up, in a well-ventilated room for at least 24 hours. Don't use a hair dryer, radiator or direct sunlight. Only use it again once it's completely dry, including the rubber base.

Quick clean for everyday spills

For small stains or spills, you don't need a full wash. Dab the spot with a damp cloth and a tiny bit of mild soap, then let it dry. Wipe spills right away; the sooner you act, the less they soak in.

How often should you clean it?

TypeWhen
Quick wipeWhenever you notice a spill or mark.
Full hand washAbout once a month, or more often if you game a lot or your hands get warm.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Machine washing or using the dryer: it can damage the base, the edges and the surface.
  • Harsh cleaners or bleach: they can fade the design and break down the cloth.
  • Hot water or direct heat: it can weaken the bond between cloth and rubber.
  • Using it while still damp: moisture trapped under the pad can cause smells and slow drying.

Keep it clean for longer

Wash your hands before long sessions, keep drinks away from your desk space, and consider a gaming arm sleeve. It covers your forearm, so less sweat and skin oil reach your pad, and it glides more smoothly across your desk.
